IP54 vs IP55 vs IP65: Which Enclosure Rating Do You Need?
Explain IP ratings and how to choose the right one for your environment.
IP (Ingress Protection) rating tells you how dust and water resistant an enclosure is, and how much protection it gives against water.
The first digit is solid particle protection (0-6), second is liquid protection (0-9)
IP54: dust-protected (limited ingress, no harmful deposit), splash water from any direction
Typical for indoor panels, office environments
IP55: limited dust ingress, water jets from any direction
Typical for indoor industrial, factory floors
IP65: dust-tight, water jets
Typical for outdoor, washdown areas, wet locations
IP66: dust-tight, powerful water jets
For high-pressure washdown (food, pharma)
How to choose? Indoor dry area → IP54
Factory floor → IP55
Outdoor → IP65
Washdown / coastal → IP66
When in doubt, go one rating higher than you think you need
It's cheaper than a field failure
