How to Protect Your IP When Outsourcing to China
NDA, trade secrets, and practical steps to protect your designs.
Protecting intellectual property when outsourcing to China is a common concern
Here are practical steps
- Sign an NDA before sending drawings. A mutual NDA protects both sides; make sure it covers drawings, designs, pricing and customer information.
- Mark drawings "Confidential — Property of [Your Company]. No reproduction."
- Work with reputable factories: ask for references, visit and check reviews. Avoid factories that ask for full design files before an NDA.
- Segment sensitive parts: if your product has a unique mechanism, source that part separately and outsource only the generic sheet metal enclosure.
- Register your trademark and patent in China: Chinese trademark registration is inexpensive and effective.
- Use escrow or third-party inspection for high-value projects.
At Yiguangnian, we sign NDA with every customer, never reuse customer designs, and treat all drawings as confidential.
